What are the MTV VMA awards?

The MTV video music awards (also know as the VMA's) is an annual award show that recognizes and celebrates the best music and music artists. The VMA's were established in 1984. This is an important pop culture event because the VMA's are known for their extravagant performances and actual awards.

The 2024 VMA's were hosted in the UBS arena in Elmont, New York.

Who dressed the best?

Because the VMA's are a significant events celebrities want show up looking their best. This is my opinion on the top 5 best dressed at the VMA's. Disclaimer these opinions are my own, there are countless of celebrities that attended the VMA's so it's possible that I could have missed your favorite celebrity outfit. This list is also in no particular order. Now that that's out of the way let's get into the top 5 best outfits in my opinion.

MTV

1. Sabrina Carpenter

I don't think it's a surprise that Sabrina's look was a favorite among everyone. The singer had a 'me espresso' moment by showing up in a vintage silver gown by Bob Mackie. This gown  was initially inspired by Marilyn Monroe. This gown is vintage Hollywood and everyone is living for it. Not only does the gown suit Sabrina's body type perfectly, the color also perfectly compliments her skin tone. The gown is a gorgeous blend of old Hollywood, and Sabrina managed to make it new while still classy. I appreciate her not going to over the top with her outfit and keeping it relatively simple. If she did go over the top it would looked like the dress was wearing her instead of her wearing the dress. Her dress particularly draws attention to old Hollywood glam of the 1930's and 1940's. The gown with it's sleek figure-hugging design, was a staple for many old stars. Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly are known for this particular style. The shimmering satin material was also very popular at the time as it was known for wealth and luxury in the 1930's to 1940's. Satin in general has a smooth and glossy finish, and yes, it was expensive to produce. This made it a status symbol in fashion. Hollywood stars and wealthy individuals favored it for its luxurious appearance. Satin also drapes beautifully on the body make it even more appealing. During this time satin was used to create glamourous but elegant looks that embodied wealth and sophistication. Basically for the wealthy it was a way to showcase their wealth and social status. Satin gowns would also be paired with diamond and other expensive material to enhance the look. The delicate detailing but the bold and refined dress look are reminiscent of the golden age of Hollywood
Her hair also perfectly complimented her gown. She wore her hair in lose, long waves. Her hair was voluminous and added a soft, romantic touch to her outfit, but smooth giving nod to old Hollywood celebrities. The ONLY pet peeve I have with the outfit is that I think she should've worn pearls with the outfit. I feel like pearls would've not only matched her soft glam outfit so well but also the old Hollywood vibes too. I mean there's nothing wrong with her current necklace she's wearing in fact if does look quite nice. I just feel like pearls would've really taken this outfit from good to great.  Pearls would've really made this outfit classy, sophisticated and added to her romantic but soft look.
Overall I quite like this outfit. Not only is it not over the top but everything suites her well and makes her look good without the outfit being too bland or looking like it was consuming her. Her makeup also ties in nicely with her gown, with shiny white eyeshadow and a muted red lip. Overall I think this outfit is sophisticated, and classy while still being modern and up-to-date.

2.  Lisa

Okay I know this is another white outfit, but I genuinely love this outfit on her. Lisa is in custom Mugler and I firstly want to talk about her choice of white. White in general is seen as a color of purity and is overall a pretty simplistic color. I found it interesting she chose this color when the VMA's are usually known for more flashier outfits in terms of color, This doesn't mean the outfit is bland however, because the silhouette is actually quite striking. I think pairing a simple color with bold cuts, structure, accessories, etc. Can have a simple but powerful look to the overall outfit. I think this makes her stand out (in a good way) because most celebrities go for more extravagant looks and color. I like how she managed to keep her outfit simple and yet classy as well as managing to keep the outfit interesting.
There was big emphasis on a tailored fit for this outfit. The silhouette is also figure hugging with clean lines and structure. The silhouette really highlight Lisa's figure in a great way allowing it to be chic and minimalist. I feel like this also made her stand out in a positive way.
I want to talk about the different elements on this dress because not everything is figure hugging. It's a good thing to mix it up and add different elements of flow and structure, it can keep your outfits interesting. This is especially important when you're working basic colors. I like her mermaid skirt with the hood and the small sash that drapes along her bodice.
Now her bodice is another component that I really like. It's semi translucent. It's safe to say that the bodice was a focal point for her outfit. It added structure and elegance to her outfit and definitely enhanced the overall look. The tiny embellishments on the bodice add a layer of depth while not being too overpowering.
Overall this outfit is elegant, while still being modern. The necklace also adds a nice touch to the overall outfit. In fact I don't think I would have liked the outfit nearly as much if it didn't have a statement piece like that necklace.
The only thing I would change about this outfit is maybe adding flowy sleeved instead of the arm hugging ones instead. I just feel like flowy sleeves would've matched the outfit better and added to the look. I also wished there was more embellishments on the gown itself. It could've been subtle, or even adding gold accents would've tied this outfit together making it royal and elegant. Overall I like this look for it's simple, yet elegant approach. I think this outfit really suites her and she definitely looks amazing.

3. Danna Paola

Danna Paola's outfit is certainly striking. Her outfit is bold and each element of her gown really plays a key role in the overall composure of her outfit.
The leather in her outfit sets the tone for a bold and edgy look. Leather is usually associated with strength and rebellion which gives the outfit an edgy, rock-chic sort of vibe. The leather also adds shine to the otherwise plain black dress which add some depth and appeal to her outfit. The silhouette is a tube, figure-hugging, and strapless dress. The sleek design really allows her figure to be accentuated allowing for an elegant and sleek design. I don't mind at all that dress is minimalist because it's more like a canvas for other component of her outfit to really shine. I think this outfit is especially fitting for the VMA's because the VMA's is known for their edgy and bold outfits and I think her outfit is a great example of that.
Now the yellow and black cape. In my opinion this is the reason why I love the outfit so much. We've seen plain black dresses everywhere and honestly there's nothing wrong with that. But I love when people elevate them. Either by adding bold pieces, accessories, etc. I love it when they use it as a canvas for their creativity and this look is perfect example of that. The cape being bright, perfectly contrasts her black dress making a striking appearance. Not just in color but the structure as well. The flowy cape contrasts the sleek, figure-hugging dress perfectly. I think this color choice makes her stand out in a good way. The cape is a statement within itself. Capes in fashion obviously evoke grandeur and drama. This gives the person wearing the cape a feeling of power and importance. From the way she was posing I'm guessing that she felt just that. I think the cape just makes the look more cultivating and visually captivating.
I love it when designers push the boundaries of usual silhouettes and get creative with how they can elevate the look. Whether that's colors or the construction of the gown, I love to see designers really pushing with what they can do and seeing their creativity on the carpet. Danna's look really taped into high fashion while making a statement of power.
As far as accessories, hair and makeup go she kept it pretty minimal which makes sense since the cape does most of the talking.
Overall I loved this look a lot because of how much she took a risk. It ended up being so bold and extravagant and she looked amazing in the dress. I love the bold, dramatic look and the boundaries she definitely pushed with her look. In my opinion she set the bar high with this outfit of hers alone.

4.  Laura Whitmore

I don't know what others think of her outfit but I love Laura's dress on her. I think it's the blue that's just so striking too me. I know this outfit might be a bit simple then the others but I still think this dress is visually so interesting to look at.
Firstly, the cobalt blue dress looks amazing on her. The blue is both rich and sophisticated. This rich color really stands out and contrasts the carpet and her skin tone. I think the reason why I love her look so much is how much the blue compliments her skin tone. I think if this dress was any other color I wouldn't have liked it that much. The blue also evokes confidence with a blend of elegance which suites the VMA's perfectly.
The plunging neckline adds a daring element to her look. This outfit definitely gives a red carpet worthy look without being too revealing which is what I also like about this look as well. It's a good balance of glamour and sophistication. I also like the ruffled shoulder which kind of reminds me of roses. I think it makes the dress more interesting a long with the pleats within the dress.
I also like to add that the fabric has a certain shine to it which I also really like. The shine with the blue is just chef's kiss. I also love her sash at the side of her dress as well. It just adds to the overall look of her outfit.
Her blue smokey eye matches with her dress so well and I like her half up and down look. I think it's such a perfect blend of modern but timeless.
The only thing I would add is maybe minimal jewelry. Obviously the color of the dress is speaking for itself but adding a dainty diamond necklace would have just accented the look making it perfect. Also this may just be my personal preference but if she did a train at the back of the dress instead of a sash.. no words. I can even imagine it in my head and it would have been surreal. It would have been giving goddess vibes if I'm being honest and I would have been living for it.
Overall I really like this look. Although it may be simple, the striking color perfectly compliments her skin tone with the pleats made her look elegant and sophisticated. This look is the definition of making a statement without going overboard. She really taught us that less is really more.

5.  Camilla Cabello

https://www.elle.com/culture/celebrities/a62152135/camila-cabello-red-carpet-photos-vmas-2024/

Camilla's look for the event definitely stood out. She embraced a chic yet dramatic look wearing a black velvet dress made by Tony Ward. This dress was very iconic and elegant making it look like a work of art.
The intricate black embroidery on the dress made it stand out. It was done so well and looks very sophisticated as well. The velvet fabric added a nice touch and made the outfit look luxurious. The dress was tailored really well because they captured Camilla's figure perfectly. This dress did a great job of balancing structure and softness with the flowlines of the dress and the structure of the bodice. The embroidery details beautifully captured that gothic romantic feel to her outfit and made the outfit stand out. These embellishments helped made the dress look more visually appealing to look at.
Her sheer black veil really tied in with this outfit and made the outfit more special. Veils usually add a sense of drama and mystery which added to her otherworldly aesthetic. The veil matched the gothic vibe she was going for and added another layer of complexity to her outfit. Her veil blended beautifully with her outfit; it was striking but didn't take away the attention from the actual dress which I admire. It just goes so well with her dark glamour look and really adds to the outfit. I also want to point out the details on the veil which again the smallest details just add so much to the overall look.
Her accessories also matched her outfit so well. She wore an onyx crucifix necklace from designer Loree Rodkin. The accessories definitely went well with her gothic romantic vibe. Other than that she didn't go to overboard with the jewelry which is a good choice in my opinion because I feel like it would've just taken away from the overall look of her outfit. It would've been to distracting and wouldn't have looked good.
I think her blend of modern gothic and old Hollywood glamour worked really nicely. The veil and the accessories definitely gave a gothic vibe while the silhouette and velvet fabric gave a luxurious feeling.
The only minor thing I would've change is the embroidery. If she really wanted to embrace that gothic vibe it would've been cool to see the embroidery match gothic-type architecture and really would've added to the outfit. Then again that's just my opinion and I still think the current embroidery looks just as nice as well. I'm just saying it would have been incredible if she did pull inspiration especially from gothic cathedrals.
Overall Camilla's outfit beautifully blended gothic drama and elegance into an outfit. The idea they had definitely translated well into real life. All the pieces came, worked together, matched each other and didn't look random at all.  Her bold yet sophisticated look definitely made heads turn that night!

Conclusion

These are my opinions on some of the looks I especially adored. Obviously everybody looked really good and unique on the carpet and it's so fun to discuss which looks we enjoyed and why. I hoped you enjoyed reading about some of my opinions and takes on each outfit. I especially had a great time looking at each outfit and just sharing why I love each outfit. The VMA's is such a culturally significant event so it's always fun to see what our favorite celebrities decide to wear. I especially love it when celebrities take risks and go outside of their comfort zone and make outfits that are visually appealing, and look amazing on them! Thanks for reading my little talk
session and I hope to see you at the next blog post!
